Project Worker Leeds DIP, West Yorkshire
I didn’t know anything about social care before I got involved with DISC. Maths graduates like me usually end up in accountancy or teaching. When I first left university I went to work for a bank in a call centre. I hated it. It felt like selling out. A friend told me about DISC and suggested giving volunteering a go. The first time I visited Mabgate Mill in Leeds I didn’t know what to expect and felt slightly apprehensive. But I soon felt at home as it’s a great environment to be in and everyone is friendly. I was amazed at how much went on behind the scenes.
After finishing my training I volunteered for one day a week for 9 months. I went on prison visits and did outreach and office work. I really enjoyed it and realised I wanted to continue working with people and doing something I believe in. I started applying for jobs and got one as a project worker after several attempts. DISC is good at creating opportunities for volunteers. It has opened my eyes to a whole new world. It’s one I definitely want to stay in.
